Rubiaux Rising

Steve De Jarnatt
Santa Monica Review

"Never take you back, son, hard as it break my heart," Aunt Cleoma told Rubiaux. "This the last you come home like this—we don't break this demon now."

Two weeks ago that was, and since then Rubiaux has sweated away twenty-two pounds of his bedeviled flesh, screaming up in Cleoma's attic where she nailed him shut. A pot chamber to piss in, another to upchuck the cooler of gumbo and crackers he’s tried to eat between sieges of nausea. High nineties it's been in the day, just the thing for the bone chills and shivering spasms they both knew came with the territory.
